  1. Oracle

Redwood Shores, Calif.

In late 2018, enterprise software giant Oracle entered the SD-WAN market by buying well-known pureplay Talari Networks, a move to complement its session border controller, network management, and cloud offerings.

Key values/differentiator:

  • Oracle acquired Talari’s mature SD-WAN portfolio, which includes the Talari Controller to centrally manage and distribute services and application policies, appliances, the Talari Overlay Network to link the appliances and controller, as well as real-time analytics and visibility into the network and capacity planning.
  • Cloud-based management of SD-WAN connectivity for clouds and networks is available through Oracle’s SD-WAN Orchestration Cloud Service.
  • With Talari SD-WAN, enterprises gain an open and extensible WAN for data centers, remote offices, and cloud services, with packets routed based on the bandwidth available for the protocol. Business-critical applications are given higher priority than those that are not. This capability is embedded in the packet header.
  1. Nuage Networks

The value proposition for potential buyers: Nuage Networks, launched in 2013, is backed by parent company Nokia, a global network vendor.

Key values/differentiator:

  • The SD-WAN solution offered by Nuage is Virtualized Network Services (VNS), which also includes the Network Services Gateway, which runs on x86-based branch hardware. When connected to the network, the NSG calls for a policy engine and downloads a pre-defined configuration based on the location.
  • VNS allows enterprises to control and manage all their IT services from one interface and view them from anywhere, whether the location is a data center, a public cloud, or an enterprise branch.
  • VNS, the company’s latest version of the software, was released in September 2018. Officials are referring to SD-WAN 2.0, which goes beyond automating and managing connectivity between branch offices. The platform should include seamless WAN connectivity between data centers, SaaS providers, and public cloud providers, as well as the ability to deploy value-added services on the platform.
