Network availability and security functionality are seamlessly integrated with SD-WAN technology from the best-in-class providers, assuring an optimal user experience.

SD-WAN solutions with advanced features:

The following list shows the top six SD-WAN vendors and service providers for 2021, excluding Cisco Systems.

  1. Oracle

Redwood Shores, Calif.

In late 2018, enterprise software giant Oracle entered the SD-WAN market by buying well-known pureplay Talari Networks, a move to complement its session border controller, network management, and cloud offerings.

Key values/differentiator:

  • Oracle acquired Talari’s mature SD-WAN portfolio, which includes the Talari Controller to centrally manage and distribute services and application policies, appliances, the Talari Overlay Network to link the appliances and controller, as well as real-time analytics and visibility into the network and capacity planning.
  • Cloud-based management of SD-WAN connectivity for clouds and networks is available through Oracle’s SD-WAN Orchestration Cloud Service.
  • With Talari SD-WAN, enterprises gain an open and extensible WAN for data centers, remote offices, and cloud services, with packets routed based on the bandwidth available for the protocol. Business-critical applications are given higher priority than those that are not. This capability is embedded in the packet header.
  1. Nuage Networks

Mountain View, Calif.

The value proposition for potential buyers: Nuage Networks, launched in 2013, is backed by parent company Nokia, a global network vendor.

Key values/differentiator:

  • The SD-WAN solution offered by Nuage is Virtualized Network Services (VNS), which also includes the Network Services Gateway, which runs on x86-based branch hardware. When connected to the network, the NSG calls for a policy engine and downloads a pre-defined configuration based on the location.
  • VNS allows enterprises to control and manage all their IT services from one interface and view them from anywhere, whether the location is a data center, a public cloud, or an enterprise branch.
  • VNS, the company’s latest version of the software, was released in September 2018. Officials are referring to SD-WAN 2.0, which goes beyond automating and managing connectivity between branch offices. The platform should include seamless WAN connectivity between data centers, SaaS providers, and public cloud providers, as well as the ability to deploy value-added services on the platform. Voice-over-IP, next-generation firewalls, WiFi access, and the Internet of Things are examples of VAS.
  1. Fortinet

Sunnyvale, Calif.

In 20+ years, Fortinet has been the leader in cybersecurity and has continued to create a comprehensive ‘Secure SD-WAN solution organically based on a network-centric security approach. SD-WAN capabilities from FortiNet scale from the office to the branch office, enabling self-healing networks by leveraging the cloud.

Key values/differentiators:

  • In addition to its widely used flagship product Fortinet Secure SD-WAN, which has over 21,500 customers, Fortinet also provides Next-Generation Firewall (NGFW) and SD-WAN functionality.
  • The highest performance and lowest TCO of any SD-WAN ASIC on the market are achieved by Fortinet’s unique approach. Furthermore, NSS Labs SD-WAN Group tests in 2018 and 2019 validated this recommendation.
  • FortiManager’s SD-WAN Orchestrator is a unified configuration module that simplifies the experience of configuring network settings and automating overlay networks. Dynamic application steering, network remediation, and failover are enabled by intuitive Business Policies.
  • Fortinet’s Secure SD-WAN is available in multiple form factors from hardware to virtual and in all major public cloud providers such as Azure, AWS, Google Cloud Platform, Alibaba, IBM, and Oracle.
  1. Palo Alto Networks

Santa Clara, Calif.

The value proposition for potential buyers: Palo Alto Networks, the industry’s leading cybersecurity company, recently acquired CloudGenix, bringing together best-in-class security with cloud-delivered SD-WAN on a single platform.

Key Differentiators:

  • The cloud-delivered branch architecture takes advantage of cloud capabilities such as cloud-based networking and security to deliver and manage branch infrastructure.
  • By utilizing machine learning and data science methodologies, network and security operations can be automated and complexity reduced. The CloudBlades APIs also simplifies integration with CloudGenix CloudBlades.
  • Assists in the creation of network policy and traffic engineering by providing deep application visibility using Layer 7 intelligence. By providing outstanding user experience through enhanced visibility and intelligence, network teams can deliver SLAs across cloud, UCaaS, and SaaS apps.
  1. Masergy

Plano, Texas

A managed service provider (MSP) like Masergy offers a broad range of network solutions, security solutions, and collaboration solutions. One of the most forward-thinking MSPs in SD-WAN, the company has defined the future of the technology.

Key values/differentiators:

  • AI has recently been integrated into its SD-WAN offering, making it the only MSP to lead with an AIOps story and to have a strong AI-driven SASE story.
  • As well as identity analytics for users and Shadow IT detection, Masergy gives customers a choice of firewall delivery options: on-premises, cloud-native, or a hybrid.
  • Those companies that don’t have the skills to make the transition to SD-WAN can choose one of Masergy’s fully managed or co-managed solutions.
  • In one platform you can get SD-WAN, SD-network, UCaaS, CCaaS, and a full suite of managed security solutions
  • Provides a flexible model for developing solutions that meet SASE requirements
  • A single portal for end-to-end visibility with real-time analytics and controls
  • Our industry-leading SLAs include SLAs for direct cloud connections and proactive credit.
  1. Aruba / HPE

Santa Clara, Calif.

With its SD-Branch approach, Aruba pioneered the SD-Branch market in 2018 with a new approach to modernizing branch networks to meet evolving mobile, cloud, and IoT requirements. By integrating cloud-managed SD-WAN, wired and wireless networking solutions, and securing them with context-based policy enforcement, network operators can improve network availability and application performance while reducing management time and costs.

Key values/differentiators:

  • Cloud-based management provides provisioning and management of wired and wireless connections inside a branch, as well as WAN and Internet connections through SD-WAN infrastructure. Using this approach, organizations can rapidly deploy new services and change network configuration across distributed environments without involving on-site IT.
  • With Aruba’s security solutions, interbranch and WAN policy enforcement can be automated and granular. In addition, an extension of Aruba’s unified branch defense capability provides unique, identity-based attack detection and intrusion prevention capabilities to deliver zero-trust network security in stores.
  • Contextual awareness of applications, users, and devices delivers granular QoS within the branch and over the WAN for SaaS, mobile UC, and other remote applications. A consistent experience is provided regardless of how access is handled by users, device types, or locations inside and outside of branches by prioritizing and routing LAN traffic within and outside branches.
  • The integration of the Aruba SD-WAN solution with AWS Transit Gateway Network Manager greatly simplifies the deployment and management of networks connecting remote branch locations to Amazon Virtual Private Clouds (VPCs). AWS SD-WAN deployment teams can more easily monitor and manage the connection between AWS resources and their on-premises sites with Aruba Central or AWS Transit Gateway Network if they deploy Aruba SD-WAN.
